Understanding Baptism
Baptism is a beautiful celebration of your decision to follow Jesus and publicly declare your faith. It’s an outward expression of the inward transformation God has begun in your life. Just as a wedding ring symbolizes a marriage covenant, baptism represents the covenant you’ve made with God.
When you’re immersed in the water, it’s a powerful symbol of Christ’s death and burial. Rising from the water declares His resurrection and the new life you now have in Him.
Through baptism, you’re sharing three incredible truths:
- You are a follower of Jesus Christ.
- Your life is being transformed by Him.
- You are part of God’s family forever.

A Public Proclamation of Faith
Baptism is a powerful symbol of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. It represents leaving your old life behind and embracing the new identity you’ve received in Jesus.
Through this act, you boldly proclaim that you belong to Christ and are walking in a new life of faith. It’s a moment that reflects God’s transforming grace in your life and declares your commitment to follow Him fully.
Following Jesus’ Example
Jesus set the example for us by being baptized, and He calls His followers to do the same. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commissions His disciples:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
At Pillar, we baptize because it’s an important step of obedience in your faith journey. It’s a moment to share your decision with others and celebrate with your church family, friends, and loved ones.
Are you ready?
Ready to Take the Next Step?
You’ve said “yes” to following Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and now you feel ready to make it public. Baptism is the next step in your faith journey.
Not only is baptism a command from Jesus, but it’s also an act of faith that deepens your relationship with Him. As a church, we’re here to celebrate this important moment with you and support you every step of the way.
Have Questions?
We understand that baptism is a significant step in your faith journey, and you may have questions about what it means and what to expect. Below, we’ve provided answers to some common questions to help guide you through the process and understand its purpose according to scripture.
Do I need to be baptized to be saved?
No. We do not believe that baptism secures salvation. Based on scripture in Romans 10:9 as well as Ephesians 1:8, salvation is a free gift given to us by God because of grace to all who believe in the death burial and resurrection of his son, Jesus Christ.
What if I was baptized as an infant?
If you’ve put your faith in Jesus and have never been baptized as an adult, we would strongly recommend you being baptized again. More times than not, infant baptism is an expression of our parents faith, not our own.
What happens after I’m baptized?
We view baptism as an initial step to discipleship. Based on scripture in Acts 2:42-47, we want to help you find and grow in a community of believers who will help you on this adventure with Jesus. Post baptism, you will receive a separate e-mail from us with an invitation to join a life group.
Can my child be baptized?
Yes! We love celebrating when kids decide to follow Jesus. We believe baptism is a public declaration of a personal decision to trust and follow Him. If your child is asking questions about baptism, our team would love to help guide that conversation to ensure they understand what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus. email baptism@thepillar.com
Can family and friends attend the baptism?
Absolutely! Baptism is a celebration — and we love when families and friends gather to cheer on what God is doing in someone’s life.
Do parents need to be baptized first?
Not necessarily. While we encourage parents to lead by example, your child’s decision to follow Jesus and be baptized is their own personal step of faith. Our team would be honored to help your family walk through this moment together.
